Congratulations on your pregnancy! The following guidelines would be helpful for you to follow during this special time.

While you're pregnant, the only food your baby gets is from the food you eat.

Try to plan each day so you are able to eat the right kinds and amounts of food you need.

If your doctor has given you a vitamin-iron supplement, be sure to take it as prescribed.

CAUTION!!

Just as the good gets to your baby, so does the bad!
If you smoke, drink alcohol, or take any drugs, your baby may suffer.
Be aware of the possible dangers!

EXERCISE!!

Exercise is important even when you're pregnant. It can be very relaxing and help you feel good all over. Exercise also helps you get your figure back after the baby's born.

Important Nutrients Needed for a Healthy Pregnancy

Carbohydrates- "Carbs" provide energy and help the body make the best use of other nutrients.

Protein- Helps to build and repair all body tissues. Helps to fight infection and regulate body functions.

Fat- Provides energy and carries fat-soluble vitamins. Needed for healthy skin.

Vitamin A- Promotes growth and development and is necessary for healthy vision.

Vitamin C- Helps to maintain blood vessels, bones, teeth, and muscles. Aids in iron absorption and helps body fight infection.

Folate- Helps the body form red blood cells and aids in the formation of genetic material.

B-Vitamins- Helps to keep the nervous system healthy and helps the body function properly. Promotes normal appetite and digestion.

Calcium- Helps to build and maintain strong bones and teeth. Helps muscles and nerves function normally and helps blood clot.

Iron- Helps to form and maintain blood cells. Helps protect against infection and helps to carry oxygen to cells.

Fiber- Helps to keep the digestive tract healthy.

Start you pregnancy off healthy and eat a variety of foods from the Food Guide Pyramid. The servings per day are as follows:

  • 3 servings from the Milk Group
  • 2-3 servings from the Meat Group
  • 4 servings from the Vegetable Group
  • 3 servings from the Fruit Group
  • 9 servings from the Bread & Cereal Group
